The Watch

.

Non-luminous CWC pocket watches were strategically issued to the British Royal Navy across three distinct years 1977, 1994, and 1996. There was also a small batch produced for the Royal Australian Navy in 2004.
.
While the initial 1977 contract was uniquely split between luminous and non-luminous variants, the subsequent 1994 and 1996 production runs were strictly non-luminous, leaving the dial and hands entirely free of glowing paint.
.
The deliberate omission of luminous material was a critical tactical requirement for onboard use on nuclear submarines, where environment monitoring and strict light discipline were paramount. These watches were custom-tailored for submarine crews, radar operators, and darkroom technicians working in high-stakes settings where traditional radioactive Tritium paint could interfere with the vessel's sensitive radiation-detection equipment or ruin crucial night vision in total blackout conditions. By stripping the timepiece of all glowing compounds, the military ensured that personnel on nuclear submarines had a highly accurate, radiation-free, and distraction-free mechanical timing instrument that remained completely undetectable in pitch darkness.
