The Watch

The Type 20/21 Chronographs, were ordered by the French military beginning in the 1950's and supplied by France’s leading Watch Manufacturers such as Airain and Dodane. The Type 20/21 Chronographs were an active part of cockpit functionality, they had to perform. They needed to be accurate to within eight seconds a day and have a power reserve of more than 35 hours. The crucial feature the government requested was the flyback for the chronographs. The flyback function of the chronograph allowed pilots to reset or retour-en-vol timing by pressing the lower push piece.

These Watches were used by the French Air Force until the late 1980's and today's example is by Dodane and is one of the later models used. The French Military took accuracy very seriously and conducted regular accuracy checks, these Watches were engraved with the warranty period on the case back. This is indicated by numbers starting with F.G. or “Fin de Garantie” markings, which were used by watchmakers to mark the next recommended service interval for the watch. Looking at this particular watch, the engraving is faded and partially worn, but the letters "7 1 79" can be seen, indicating that the next maintenance is suggested for 7th January 1979.
