The Watch

The original Precista 1982 Royal Navy Diver holds a legendary status among military horology enthusiasts as the last mechanical dive watch ever issued to the British Ministry of Defence (MoD). Commissioned on behalf of Southern Watch & Clock Supplies Ltd, this rugged timepiece was produced to replace the increasingly expensive Rolex Military Submariner (MilSub). However, its time in active service was brief. As the MoD aggressively shifted its procurement toward highly accurate and cost-effective quartz movements by 1983, the 1982 Precista mechanical contract was abruptly halted, locking the watch into a single, highly coveted production year.
.
What makes the 1982 original so visually striking and distinct is its unique "Snakehead" handset and functional design. Built inside a rugged, asymmetrical stainless steel case manufactured by Racine Swiss, the watch features integrated crown guards and robust fixed lug bars designed to securely hold a military NATO strap. Its matte black dial returned to a simple dot-and-baton layout reminiscent of the classic MilSub, but it was completely defined by its prominent, spear-shaped minute hand. This broad "Snakehead" hand provided exceptional underwater legibility for Royal Navy divers and ultimately gave the watch its enduring nickname among modern collectors.
.
It is widely acknowledged that only 250 examples were originally produced under the 1982 MoD contract. Because these timepieces were genuine military tools subjected to unforgiving maritime operations, many were lost to the depths, damaged beyond repair, or discarded at the end of their service lives. Our friend and well-respected military watch researcher, Terry Andrews, has meticulously monitored and tracked these elusive watches for over a few decades. Through his exhaustive record-keeping, he has noted that only 36 of the original 250 examples are known to still exist today.
